The State Fruit

Why the
Fuzz? πŸ‘

There are 71 streets in Atlanta named "Peachtree." But here is the secret: they might actually be named after a pine tree.

🌲

The "Pitch" Tree Theory

Historians believe the original Creek Indian settlement here was called "Standing Pitch Tree" (Pakanahuili). It was named after a massive pine tree used for its sap (pitch).

Over time, the Southern drawl softened "Pitch" into "Peach." So, we might actually be the Big Pine.

Myth vs Reality

Lost in Translation.

Despite the fame, Georgia isn't even the biggest peach producer (South Carolina produces more). But after the Civil War, Georgia marketers rebranded the state as the "Peach State" to move away from the image of cotton.

The 71 Peachtrees.

Peachtree St, Peachtree Rd, Peachtree Blvd, Peachtree Cir, Peachtree Pl... getting lost is a rite of passage.

Peachtree Street

The main spine. This is where the parades happen, where the Fox Theatre lives, and where you run the Peachtree Road Race.

Peachtree Center

The confusing downtown hub designed by John Portman. It looks like a sci-fi movie set (and was used in Hunger Games).

The Wrong One

If your GPS says "Peachtree Industrial Blvd," turn around. You are heading to the suburbs, and you will be late for dinner.

McDonough, GA

"If you want the movie-moment of walking through an orchard, you have to leave the city. Grab a basket, drive 40 minutes south, and pick them straight off the tree. It’s warm, sweet, and incredibly romantic."

πŸ’‘ Date Tip

Go in late May or June. After picking, share a cup of their famous homemade peach ice cream on the rocking chairs.

This is the "Cottagecore" dream. It’s a working family farm that lets you slow down.

The Market

Buy a jar of peach jam and a loaf of bread to take home. It extends the date into the next morning's breakfast.

Where to Eat It.

Okay, even if it's a myth, the fruit is real. Here is where to find the best peach-infused dates in the city.

You don't have to run to enjoy it. The best date is grabbing mimosas at a patio on Peachtree and cheering for the runners. It's pure community energy.
